The Drömling Project.
Drömling, an EU-sanctioned protected area for birds, is still an important habitat for the white stork and grassland birds. During the migratory season many northern birds, including cranes, stopover in Drömling.
THE STORK FOUNDATION - Störche für unsere Kinder - began the Project in Naturpark Drömling in 1992. The foundation, through limited use and restoration of former wetlands, is ensuring the retention of intact habitats in what is known as the "Land of a Thousand Gullies". Several hectares of land have been restored and made available to farmers as wetland meadows for limited agriculture use. First signs of accomplishment are the occupation of white stork nests, which had been abandoned for decades, and a high breeding success. This effort benefits not only the white stork and many rare meadow birds like the curlew, but also highly endangered plant and animal species.
THE STORK FOUNDATION - Störche für unsere Kinder – hopes to acquire further areas to be converted into wet grasslands including small shallow pools with changing water tables.
